"Kantale Wewa" full of natural beauty
It is believed that the technology of reservoir construction in Sri Lanka was at its peak between the Anuradhapura Kingdom and the Polonnaruwa Kingdom. It is said that most of the large reservoirs in Ceylon were built during this period. But other large lakes such as Minneriya Wewa and Kaudulla Wewa belong to the early 3rd century. Although not as large as those giant lakes, Kantale Lake is a reservoir that could be seen on the way to Trincomalee and was noticed during the colonial period.
Kantale has been known as "Gantalawa" since the time of the kings.
When the government tried to colonize the Ganges in the early 1950s, a group of original villagers set up camp in the jungle and only a short path from the main camp was built to enter it. The leader of the group erected a small sign at the top of the road and named it "Gantalawa Camp Road".
We are pleased to note that after the 1986 renovations, the capacity of the Kantale Reservoir is greater than that of Parakrama, Kaudulla and Minneriya.
